Steenbuck

Raphicerus campestris. The Steenbuck is also known as Steenbok (Afrikaans). A graceful little buck, it has large ears, long, slender legs, a slim body and a tiny tuft of a tail. It gets its name from the Afrikaans steen (meaning 'brick'): a reference to the overall colour of the species.
Near Satara Restcamp, Kruger Park, in summer.

''Aepyceros melampus''. Herd of Impala does at Hluhluwe Game Reserve, Zululand just after first fawning. Smorgasbord for predatory cats!
Two birthing peaks occur - one in spring and one in autumn. After birth, kids lie concealed away from their mother, subsequently joining a ''kindergarten'' group with other animals of the same age.

Impala male at Hluhluwe Game Reserve.
The graceful impala is a slender, medium-sized antelope so adaptable that it is found from southern Africa to the northern limits of East Africa. They can jump up about 3m into the air and, while running, they can cover up to 9m in a single bound. These abilities help them escape predators.

© Paul Juby
            Ref:  00024_Bushbuck
Bushbuck in coastal forest at Maphalane, Zululand. The Bushbuck is also the only non-territorial and solitary African antelope with neither males nor females defending any part of their home range. Even females prefer to keep social interactions with their young to not more than a few hours a day. Mature males usually go out of their way to avoid contact with each other.
